A police K-9 officer died after being left in a hot car in Missouri, and an investigation is ongoing.
Savannah Police Chief David Vincent revealed K-9 Horus’ death in a press statement to PEOPLE on June 26. According to the announcement, the dog died on June 20 “after completing an overnight shift on patrol in Savannah.”
While authorities did not include details of Horus’ death in the report, they did confirm to local station Fox 21 that the dog died after being left in a hot car. Everyone attempted to contact the Savannah Police Department for additional confirmation but did not receive an immediate response. Horus’ death is still being investigated, according to the announcement.
“Due to this being an open investigation, there will be no further information released until that investigation is completed,” according to the release from the chief. “The entire department would appreciate your thoughts and prayers as we deal with losing our partner, Horus.”
Horus, a German Shepherd, had been working for the police department as a K-9 officer since February 2021, according to a Facebook post from the department. In a statement to PEOPLE about Horus’ death, Andrew County Prosecuting Attorney Monica J. Morrey said she has asked the Missouri State Highway Patrol to conduct a particular inquiry.
“The Andrew County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office is deeply saddened to learn of K-9 Horus’ passing,” according to a statement issued on June 23. “We are grateful to him for his service to our community.” The statement continued, “I have requested a special investigation by the Missouri State Highway Patrol.” I shall await the results of this investigation before deciding on any required action.”
