Local media said that an American tourist was discovered dead on Sunday on the Greek island of Corfu. This is the most recent in many incidents when visitors visiting the Greek islands have either passed away or vanished. According to AFP, which cited local media, another traveler saw the man in the water close to Mathraki’s historic harbor and alerted the authorities.
Body of US Tourist Found on Greek Island:
A disturbing pattern of local tourists going missing or dying in the intense heat has been documented. On Sunday, the body of a U.S. tourist who had inexplicably disappeared on a beautiful Greek island was discovered on the island’s beach.
The president of the island community informed Channel that the 70-year-old American, who was last seen on Tuesday, was found dead around 1:30 p.m. local time on the isolated Greek island of Mathraki, which is located approximately 25 miles northwest of the island of Corfu.
It was not immediately clear what caused the death. Investigators said the guy disappeared while visiting a Greek-American buddy on the island.
This month, on the Greek islands, the dead tourist was the second American, and the seventh overall, to either go missing or be discovered dead. It’s thought that many of them were trekking in triple-digit heat.
When the man’s buddy got home on Thursday, the air conditioner was running, the lights were on, and the front door was open, but his friend was nowhere to be seen. He immediately phoned the police. According to authorities, the missing man’s ID and travel paperwork were also missing.
The missing tourist was last seen with two other female visitors in a taverna; they have since departed the country.
Situated to the west of Corfu, the island is home to approximately 50 permanent people without a Coast Guard or police post. The American’s corpse is anticipated to be sent to Corfu for an autopsy, and law enforcement officials and a coroner from Corfu were contacted to assist with the investigation.
In the last few days, there has also been news of another American tourist going missing from the Greek islands. On the eastern island of Samos, a missing Dutch tourist was discovered dead on Saturday.
The unidentified 74-year-old Dutch tourist’s body was discovered by firefighters using a drone to search a steep gully close to where he was last seen straining to trek on a sweltering day with triple-digit temperatures.
Albert Calibet is a former Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy who went missing four hours after hiking across Amorgos, part of the Cyclades group of islands south of the Greek mainland. Authorities are currently looking for him.
Drones, choppers, and even neighborhood shepherds have been used in the 59-year-old’s hunt; as of Sunday, neither he nor his possessions had shown up.
The experienced hiker is from Hermosa Beach, California; she holds dual citizenship with Greece and has been to Amorgos nearly yearly for ten years. Earlier this month, at least four more bodies were discovered on the islands.
British doctor and TV personality Dr. Michael Mosley was discovered dead on June 9 after going missing four days earlier from the island of Symi, which is located about 150 miles south of Samos.
On a hike, Mosley, 67, reportedly made a detour and passed out just short of a marina in an area where it would be difficult to find his corpse.
Between June 5 and June 13, three tourists from the Netherlands, France, and the Netherlands all perished in the heat on the island of Crete. They were 67, 70, and 80 years old, respectively.
